Purpose: Established in 1996 by Jonah M. Edelman to recruit and train parents, teachers, child-care professionals, and others to advocate in behalf of children in the cities and towns where they live.

Finances: The group brought in $961,000 last year. This year, it expects to raise approximately $1.5-million.
