‘Editor & Publisher’: On-Line Charity Drives
December 3, 1998 | Read Time: 1 minute
Many newspapers are putting their traditional holiday charity drives on line, reports Editor & Publisher magazine, in a November 16 column on its Web site.
Some of the sites are trying to bolster donations by accepting gifts via the Internet. Among them:
* The Boston Globe has created “Globe Santa,” to accept credit-card gifts for charity.
* The News & Record in Greensboro, N.C., is working with a local store to allow people to buy toys on-line and send them to the charity Toys for Tots.
* The Oklahoman’s Web site features an advertiser who has promised that all profits from sales of miniature trucks will be sent to groups that help the poor pay their heating bills.
Publishing officials quoted by the magazine say they hope that by offering the on-line sites, more people will find it easy to give. News organizations benefit, too, because their costs in running the sites are relatively low, the magazine says.
