IRS to Hold Public Hearing on Proposal for Travel Tours

November 19, 1998 | Read Time: 1 minute

The I.R.S. is inviting charity officials to attend a public hearing on February 10 in Washington to discuss controversial proposed guidelines on travel tours (The Chronicle, May 7).

Earlier this year, the revenue service proposed new rules to explain when universities, museums, and other tax-exempt organizations can sponsor travel tours without paying income tax on revenue from the trips. Organizations must pay unrelated-business income tax, known as UBIT, on earnings from activities not related to their tax-exempt purposes.

The I.R.S. said that those who would like to speak at the hearing must send outlines of the topics they will discuss to the government by January 20.

Outlines should be mailed to: CC:DOM: CORP:R (REG-121268-97), Room 5226, Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 7604, Ben Franklin Station, Washington 20044.

For more information about the hearing, call LaNita VanDyke at the Internal Revenue Service at (202) 622-7190.
