Internet Rally to Build Web Sites in a Day

Charities in Austin, Tex., are preparing for an old-fashioned “Web raising.”
In September, 20 non-profit groups will gather for the “Accessibility Internet Rally.” With help from teams of Internet experts, the charities will create Web sites from scratch over the course of a day. Experienced Web-site designers from local businesses and government agencies, among other places, are being asked to donate their services.
The event is being put on by three local non-profit groups: Easter Seals Serving Central Texas, Goodwill Industries of Austin, and Metropolitan Austin Interactive Network. In addition to improving local charities’ use of the Internet, the organizers hope to highlight the need to make Web sites accessible to people with disabilities. For instance, the groups want to encourage charities to create keyboard alternatives for people who have trouble using a computer mouse.
