America’s promise has revamped its World-Wide Web site in conjunction with the one-year anniversary of the Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future.
The Alexandria, Va., charity was formed to monitor progress made by last year’s summit, which promised to help two million children by the year 2000. America’s Promise has posted its one-year report on line. Visitors can search either by organization or by state for commitments made in their region.
By selecting Denny’s, for example, visitors find that the restaurant chain pledged to donate up to $1-million each of the next three years for an after-school program run by Save the Children. The company’s progress? Last year it donated $820,000 to Save the Children. The on-line listing for Denny’s also provides a forecast for 1998 and details on how to get in touch with the people at the company who can offer more information.
In the “News and Events” section of the Web site, visitors can read an e-mail interview with Larry Ellison, chairman of the Oracle Corporation, about his company’s efforts to help children gain access to the Internet. The program, “Oracle’s Promise,” is now working with 75,000 students in five cities.
The “General Powell’s Corner” section of the Web site allows people to hear the chairman of America’s Promise speak about volunteerism. Recently posted was Gen. Colin Powell’s speech to the U.S. Conference of Mayors to mark the one-year anniversary of the summit. Also available are dispatches written by the General commenting on his travels in support of the organization.
