Aid-Agency Official Slain in Burundi

May 7, 1998 | Read Time: 1 minute

The director of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency’s program in Burundi was shot and killed by bandits last month in Bujumbura, the country’s capital.

Bent Moeller Nielsen reportedly was killed and his vehicle stolen shortly after he had dropped off a colleague. The African country, which borders Rwanda, has been caught up in that region’s civil war.

Mr. Nielsen is the agency’s first employee to be slain.

Mr. Nielsen, who was born in Denmark, had served in Burundi since 1987. The agency, which has its headquarters in Silver Spring, Md., runs a health clinic and a home for the disabled in Burundi.
