Philip Morris Fights Hunger Via Dance

February 26, 1998 | Read Time: 1 minute

Philip Morris Companies is trying to encourage dance fans to do more to help the hungry.

Throughout 1998, people will receive $5 off the price of admission to performances by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington when they deposit two non-perishable food items in bins set up at the theaters. Philip Morris will cover the cost that theaters incur by offering discounted tickets, but it refused to disclose how much it expected to spend on the new effort.

Food collected from the “Arts Against Hunger” program will go to a local food bank affiliated with Second Harvest in each city.

The program is showing promise. In Atlanta, about half of the ticket buyers to a forthcoming Alvin Ailey performance gave food.
