Clinton to Resume Volunteer Awards

President Clinton is restoring a popular feature from the Bush Administration: the daily Points of Light award, which recognizes outstanding volunteer service.
Beginning January 1, Mr. Clinton will issue awards five times a week to Americans who are working to achieve the goals of the Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future. The summit, a meeting of top political, business, and charity leaders held last April, marked the start of a national effort to mobilize volunteers to help children.
The awards program resumes a practice started by then-President Bush shortly after he took office in 1989.
The new program will be sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation and the Corporation for National Service. Both groups will seek to identify candidates for the awards. Winners will be chosen by a panel of anonymous judges that may include people from charities, religious and civic groups, and the news media.
Information on nominating a person or group for the award is available by calling the Points of Light Foundation in Washington at (202) 223-9186.
