History and purpose: Established in 1976 as a fund-raising arm for 4-H clubs and programs across the country. The National 4-H Council’s original purpose was to raise money and sponsor the annual National 4-H Congress. In recent years, it has turned its attention to designing and raising money for programs that help young people.
Finances: The National 4-H Council brought in $16.3-million in 1997. It estimates that it will receive $19.9-million in 1998.
Sources of funds: The organization last year earned $7.3-million in fees from conferences at its National 4-H Center and made $2.5-million in product sales. It received $5.3-million in private contributions and $12,495 in federal grants. It also received $1.2-million in investment and other income.
