History: Established in 1991 by the film maker George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars movies.
Purpose: Set up as an operating foundation, the organization gathers and distributes information designed to improve education. It also seeks to involve the general public in helping the nation’s schools, and it is trying to find ways to get more schools to use technology in their classrooms. The foundation does not make grants.
Assets: $1,669,703 as of December 31, 1996.
Sources of funds: In 1996, the foundation received $1,551,000 in cash and $67,044 worth of office space from Lucasfilm Limited, Mr. Lucas’s motion-picture, television, and licensing company. It also received in-kind and cash gifts from several other private sources.
