New Financial Data on Grant Makers and Rankings of Foundations

The Foundation Center has issued the 1999 edition of The Foundation Directory,

which provides information on 10,445 foundations. In most cases, data are for fiscal years ending in 1997.
Sixty-nine of the 2,181 foundations that are new to the list hold assets of $20-million or more. The biggest of those is the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, in New York. With more than $1.3-billion in assets in 1997, it placed No. 29 on the list of the wealthiest grant makers.
Together, the foundations in the directory have more than $304-billion in assets and give away more than $14.3-billion in grants each year.
