Staff and Budget Cuts at Nonprofit Organizations: a Sampling

American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (New York) The organization, which helps needy Jewish communities as well as other disadvantaged people worldwide, has laid off three staff members from its International DevelopmentProgram.

Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art, History, and Science (California) The museum has closed.

Lowell Observatory (Flagstaff, Ariz.) The observatory has laid off three of its 60 employees and reduced the hours of five other staff members.

Monadnock Family Services (Keene, N.H.) The human-services group has laid off seven employees.

Northern Berkshire Healthcare (North Adams, Mass.) The health-care system cut 19 positions and will leave vacant 13 open posts.

Pasadena Playhouse (California) The theater has closed indefinitely. The organization plans to try to reopen in the future.

Sutter Lakeside Hospital (Lakeport, Calif.) The hospital has laid off or reduced the hours of 19 employees.

The Trustees of Reservations (Sharon, Mass.) The conservation group has laid off eight of its 180 employees throughout Massachusetts.

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Braddock (Pennsylvania) The medical center has closed.
