X Prize Foundation Elevates Tech Entrepreneur to Top Role (Transitions)

X Prize Foundation
Anousheh Ansari, CEO of Prodea Systems, has been named chief executive officer of this science foundation, which makes multimillion-dollar awards to solve world problems. She succeeds Peter Diamandis, who will continue in the role of founder and executive chairman.
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Melany Duval, vice president for development at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, has been named senior vice president and chief development officer, effective in January. She will oversee all fundraising efforts for Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund, which raises money for cancer care and research. The institute was No. 82 on last year’s Philanthropy 400, our annual ranking of the charities that raise the most money, after bringing in $318 million in private support.

Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund
Nageeb Sumar, deputy director for philanthropic partnerships, global policy, and advocacy at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has been appointed vice president for philanthropic strategies. This year, Fidelity Charitable has disbursed $4 billion in grants through its donor-advised funds, after donors poured $8.5 billion into their charitable funds in 2017.
Third Wave Fund
Ana Conner and Kiyomi Fujikawa will take over as co-directors next month. They succeed Rye Young, who has been executive director for five years and spent 10 years in total at the New York foundation.
Conner was senior program associate at the Transforming Movements Fund and Black-Led Movement Fund at Borealis Philanthropy.
Fujikawa was most recently senior program associate at the Fund for Trans Generations, also at Borealis Philanthropy.
More New CEOs
Kristin Ehrgood, president of the Flamboyan Foundation, has been promoted to CEO. Marci Young, the foundation’s chief operating officer, will succeed her as president of this family foundation with dual headquarters in Puerto Rico and Washington.
Stacey Paddock Malcolmson, executive vice president of external affairs at the Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity, has been appointed president and CEO of Senior Source, a Dallas social-service group that works with aging adults. She succeeds Cortney Nicolato, who has stepped down.
Abaseh Mirvali, an international art and architecture consultant, has joined the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara as executive director and CEO. She will also serve as the museum’s chief curator.
Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania
The organization has promoted several senior managers.
Stephanie Lim Capello, who previously served as chief revenue officer, is now chief operating officer.
Lori Franzke, director of individual giving at the Franklin Institute, has come to the organization as vice president for fund development.
Deborah Roman, senior director of member strategy, is now vice president for membership engagement.
Deirdra Rockemore, who previously served as director of outcomes and outreach, has been promoted to senior director of membership recruitment.
Katrina Gable, director of member services, will now be senior director for volunteer training and support, overseeing 15,000 adult volunteers.
New University Fundraisers
Andrea Angel, associate vice chancellor for alumni and development at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has been appointed vice president for university advancement at Indiana State University and CEO of its foundation.
Cheryl Crounse, associate vice president of institutional advancement at Salem State University, will be promoted to vice president of institutional advancement and executive director of the Salem State University Foundation, effective in April. She succeeds Cynthia McGurren, who is retiring after 32 years at the Massachusetts university.
George Gasser, assistant director of admissions for recruitment at Southeast Missouri State University, has been promoted to director of alumni relations. He replaces Jay Wolz, who recently retired.
Andrew Shaindlin, vice president at the philanthropy-management consulting firm Grenzebach Glier and Associates, will return to Brown University as vice president for alumni relations on December 3. He previously served as associate director of alumni relations and director of alumni education from 1989 to 1996.
Other Notable Appointments
David Daniels, vice president of operations and organizational effectiveness at the Bainum Family Foundation, has been promoted to chief operating officer.
Robert Joseph, a senior program officer at Tipping Point Community, has been named vice president of programs at the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund.
Maureen Klein, development officer at the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County, has been promoted to director of development for women’s philanthropy.
Mitchell Krebs, principal at Herd Wisdom, has joined the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust as director of its rural health-care program.
Departures
Liz Fowler, executive director of the Cleveland Zoological Society since 2001, plans to retire in January.
Derek Rapp, CEO of JDRF since 2014, intends to step down after the charity selects a new leader. Last year, the diabetes-research organization was No. 138 on the Philanthropy 400. Read more of our coverage of the group’s leadership change.
Legacies
Todd Bol, founder of the Little Free Library, died on October 18 of pancreatic cancer. He was 62. He installed the first miniature library outside his home in Hudson, Wis., in 2009, and since then, more than 75,000 people across the world have installed their own book-lending boxes on their property.
Donald Moore, who served as president the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for 10 years until his retirement in 1990, died on September 30. He was 90. He was also previously founding president of the Downtown Brooklyn Development Association.
