CFLeads Appoints New President and CEO

Mary Thomas has been hired as president and CEO of the community-foundation network.

She most recently served concurrently as chief operating officer at the Spartanburg County Foundation and executive director of the Robert Hett Chapman III Center for Philanthropy.

Center for Effective Philanthropy

Elisha Smith Arrillaga has been tapped as vice president of research.

She joins the research organization from the University of Texas at Austin where she was a faculty fellow and professor of practice in philanthropy and education policy within its College of Education. She is also the founder of Student Success Solutions, an education consulting firm.

Smith Arrillaga succeeds Ellie Buteau, who will remain with the center part-time.


Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy

Lesley Slavitt has started as executive director of the institute at Grand Valley State University.

She was previously head of civic engagement and CEO of Fiat Chrysler’s Foundation.

World Central Kitchen

Erin Gore, interim co-executive leader since August, has been promoted to CEO.

She has worked at the hunger-relief charity since 2019 and most recently served as its senior vice president for development.

More New CEOs

Megan Roth Abraham, chief advancement officer at JCC Chicago, has returned to the Goldie B. Wolfe Miller Women Leaders in Real Estate Initiative as CEO. She previously worked at this charity, which prepares women for senior leadership roles in commercial real estate, as executive director from 2016 until 2020.

Sam Gregory was promoted from director of programs, strategy, and innovation to executive director of Witness.

Carmen McDonald has been promoted from director of legal services to executive director of the Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice.

Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies

The $9.3 billion grant maker has promoted four leaders.

Elizabeth (Liz) Borer has been promoted associate general counsel to general counsel.

Ted Chen, director of evaluation and organizational learning, is now vice president for equity, culture, and learning.

Kim Christianson was promoted from director of human resources and administration to vice president for human resources and administration.

Amber Rudell has become vice president for strategic planning. Most recently she was director of strategic planning and project management.

Kathryn Brown, chief of communications at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, is joining the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as its chief communications and marketing officer.

Susan Fiske Koehler, a fundraising consultant in Northern Virginia, will be the first director of development at Azul, a Latinx environmental-justice organization that works to protect the ocean and coasts.

Marshall Levin, who previously served as CEO of the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science, is now chief philanthropic officer at the JCC Association of North America.

Emiley Lockhart, deputy general counsel and secretary at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, has joined the New England Aquarium as associate vice president of ocean sustainability, technology, and innovation. She will also lead its new BalanceBlue Lab.

Julia Pinover Kupiec, a founder and managing attorney at Disability Rights Advocates, has joined the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services as chief public-policy officer.

Cindy Naegele, chief advancement officer at OhioGuidestone, has been appointed vice president for institutional advancement at Ursuline College. She succeeds Richard Konisiewicz, who has retired after six years at the private Catholic liberal-arts college.

Felice Stadler was named vice president of government affairs at the National Audubon Society. Most recently she was vice president for political affairs at the Environmental Defense Fund.

Alexandra Traber McNamara has joined the Girl Scouts of the USA as chief corporate affairs and communications officer. Previously she was vice president for corporate affairs and global communication at the Estée Lauder Companies.
