Salvation Army and American Red Cross Share $80 Million for Climate-Driven Disaster Planning

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

Lilly Endowment

$80 million to the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross to increase their ability to prepare for and respond to hurricanes, wildfires, and other disasters exacerbated by climate change.

Each relief organization has received $40 million.

The Lilly Endowment is a financial supporter of the Chronicle.


Bloomberg Philanthropies

$50 million commitment to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to end polio worldwide before 2026.

Including this new pledge, the foundation has given the organization $225 million since 2013.

Breakthrough Energy

$50 million to LanzaJet to develop its Freedom Pines Fuels factory, which will manufacture sustainable aviation fuel that can lower emissions from jet travel.

Stand Together Foundation

$30 million commitment to support 100 nonprofit groups that address poverty and social barriers to economic success.

The foundation, which was established by the billionaire businessman Charles Koch, has chosen 25 organizations to date that will each receive coaching and consulting services as well as grants up to $300,000 over three years.

Harold Grinspoon Foundation

$25 million challenge grant over five years to JCamp 180 toward its capital campaign to make improvements and provide unrestricted support for more than 100 nonprofit Jewish overnight camps.

Ford Foundation

$13 million commitment to bolster economic research centers at universities in low-income countries to advance equity in growth policies and economic systems.

The recipients include the American University in Cairo, the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies at Wits University, the Universidad de los Andes, and El Colegio de México.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

$10 million to GivingTuesday to back its efforts to raise money for charities worldwide tied to culturally important holidays and giving traditions.

Henry L. Hillman Foundation, Heinz Endowments, PNC Foundation, and the Richard King Mellon Foundation

$4 million to the Tree of Life toward its capital campaign to rebuild the site of the Pittsburgh synagogue where 11 people were killed in an antisemitic mass shooting in 2018.

Each foundation has donated $1 million to the campaign.

Elevance Health Foundation

$3.5 million to Mental Health America to expand online interventions for people with substance-use and addiction disorders.

SECU Foundation

$2 million challenge grant to One Place to build a new child-advocacy facility that will include a mental-health clinic to provide medical services for victims of physical and sexual abuse and human trafficking in North Carolina’s Onslow County.

Gensler

$1 million to the California College of the Arts to establish the M. Arthur Gensler Jr. Center for Design Excellence and create programs that support underrepresented students in the visual arts.

Google

$1 million commitment to the New York City Employment and Training Coalition to help city residents access the education and skills necessary for well-paying careers in the technology industry.

The grant will enable the organization to focus on outreach in communities that are predominantly Black, Indigenous, and people of color.

W.K. Kellogg Foundation

$1 million over 18 months to First Book to support a coalition of nonprofit groups and membership organizations that are working to expand access to high-quality, affordable children’s books by authors from marginalized communities.

New Grant Opportunity

Monat Gratitude is accepting applications from nonprofit groups in the United States for grants to support extracurricular activities for students in arts and culture, youth sports and recreation, and youth entrepreneurship. Grants will range from $5,000 to $20,000. Applications are due November 18.
