Ford Foundation Appointment Aims to Support Social Movements

Kathy Reich was named director of Build, a new $200 million-a-year program designed to strengthen institutions and networks tied to social movements.

Over the next five years, Build will provide general operating support to organizations rather than give grants for specific projects. Initial recipients will be selected by invitation.

Ms. Reich comes to Ford from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, where she works as director of organizational effectiveness and philanthropy. She was previously policy director at the Social Policy Action Network, a legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, and a policy adviser to then-Lieutenant Governor Gray Davis.

Christopher Bedford, director of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, was named director.

Susan Friedlander Calzone, chief operating officer, was promoted to chief executive.

National YoungArts Foundation

Carolina García Jayaram, chief executive of United States Artists, was named chief executive.

Pulmonary Hypertension Association

Brad Wong, executive director of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, was appointed chief executive.

Other notable changes:

Marlene Bradford, director of philanthropy at Montgomery Hospice in Rockville, Md., was promoted to vice president for philanthropy.

Shane Giblin, director of development at Dynamic Catholic Institute, will be chief advancement officer at St. Michael’s Abbey.

Kirk Swenson, chief advancement officer at St. Mark’s School in Southborough, Mass., was appointed vice president for college advancement at Dickinson College.

Legacy:

Daniel Aaron, founding president of the Library of America, died on April 30. He was 103.

Andrew Swinney, former president of the Philadelphia Foundation, died on April 24. He was 67.
