July 27, 2011 | Read Time: 1 minute

The San Diego construction and real-estate mogul Conrad Prebys has pledged $45-million toward construction of a cardiovascular institute at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif., The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The $456-million, seven-story facility, due to open to 2015, will house cardiology programs now scattered among five Scripps Health hospitals and insurer Kaiser Permanente. It will be named for Mr. Prebys, who has emerged in recent years as one of the San Diego area’s leading donors.

The gift marks a record for the Scripps system and is the largest yet made by Mr. Prebys, who was treated for cancer last fall at a Scripps hospital.
