A children’s hospital in Kansas City has received $150 million for pediatric research.

The Hall Family Foundation and the Sunderland Foundation each donated $75 million to Children’s Mercy Hospital to begin construction on the future home of the Children’s Research Institute and to recruit top researchers to the new facility. The hospital broke ground on Thursday.

Randall O’Donnell, CEO of the hospital, said he hopes the donation helps put Children’s Mercy among the best pediatric research hospitals in the world.

“In addition to exceptional clinical care, Children’s Mercy has always placed an emphasis on research and education to transform the future of pediatrics,” he said in a statement.

The new facility will include a nine-story, 375,000-square-feet building, creating six times more space.

The Hall family, founders of the Hallmark company, and the Sunderland family, managers the Ash Grove Cement Company, are both noted donors in the Kansas City area.
