New Kennedy Center Chief: ‘We Need to Take More Risks’

October 16, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

Six weeks into her tenure as president of the Kennedy Center, Deborah Rutter says changes are in store at the country’s busiest arts venue, including a greater focus on living composers and artists and more informal spaces to encourage interaction with performers, The Washington Post writes.

“We need to take more risks,” Ms. Rutter told the National Press Club in a speech Wednesday. “I keep hearing Washington is more conservative. I’m going to push you on that.” She said the Kennedy Center’s $100-million expansion, set to break ground in December, will create more spaces for participatory events and could harken a “new format” for the Millennium Stage, the facility’s free stage.
