Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, gave Facebook stock valued at more than $2 billion to two of their charitable foundations, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission document filed Tuesday.
The couple gave 10.3 million shares of the stock valued at nearly $1.9 billion to the Chan Zuckerberg Foundation, the 501(c)(3) arm of their Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a $45 billion limited-liability company they started in 2015 through which they donate to charity, participate in public advocacy, and invest.
They also gave more than 900,000 shares valued at almost $162.4 million to the Chan Zuckerberg Donor Advised Fund at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
The couple’s net worth stands at about $74 billion, according to Forbes, and including these most recent donations, they have personally given more than $3.6 billion to charity to date.
Both of the recent donations are part of the promise the couple made in September to sell 35 million to 75 million shares of their Facebook stock over the next year and a half to back criminal-justice overhaul, education, housing, and science.
The gift to their donor-advised fund follows two others the couple gave in recent years, when they landed on The Chronicle’s annual Philanthropy 50 list of the most generous donors.
In 2013 they put 18 million shares of Facebook stock, then valued at $992.2 million, into the fund, and in 2012 they gave the same number of shares — 18 million — which were then valued at almost $498.8 million.
Correction: An earlier version of this article referred to Priscilla Chan as Patricia Chan.
