Zuckerberg’s Previous Giving Focused on Health and Public Education

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg signed the Giving Pledge in 2010, publicly committing, at the age of 26, to give away at least half of his wealth.
Today, Mr. Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are some of the most visible philanthropists in the world. They had already given or pledged $1.6 billion before announcing on Tuesday that they would commit 99 percent of their Facebook holdings — valued at about $45 billion — to improving the world.
The couple’s biggest philanthropic commitments so far:
- 2015: $45 billion to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Details are still to be announced
- 2013: $992.1 million to Silicon Valley Community Foundation
- 2012: $498.7 million to Silicon Valley Community Foundation
- 2010: $100 million to establish Startup: Education to improve Newark Public Schools
Health and Education
Some individual grants that Mr. Zuckerberg and Ms. Chan made in recent years through Startup: Education and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation:
- $120 million to Bay Area public-school districts
- $75 million to San Francisco General Hospital
- $25 million to the Centers for Disease Control Foundation to combat Ebola
- $5 million to TheDream.US to support undocumented students’ educations
