Opinion | Complaints Against Giving Back Fund’s Leadership Are Without Merit

December 8, 2023 | Read Time: 1 minute

To the Editor:

In the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s July 12 Philanthropy Today newsletter, a feature that excerpts articles about philanthropy published elsewhere online summarized a Sportico article about the Giving Back Fund, an organization I founded and have run successfully for 26 years.

The Sportico article took note of an independent investigation by a prominent law firm that was conducted after an employee we terminated raised questions about the organization’s leadership. The outcome of that investigation was that all of the allegations against me and the organization were proven meritless and baseless. Neither the Sportico article nor the Chronicle’s summary made that sufficiently clear. As a result, the Chronicle has unfortunately and unintentionally left an erroneous and misleading impression that I want to be sure does not take hold with any of its readers.

Charity Navigator, a watchdog group, has awarded the Giving Back Fund its top four-star rating, and we have a long and distinguished history of leading with integrity and best practices in helping athletes, celebrities, and others carry out good work around the world. Nothing will hinder our determination to continue that work. We welcome questions from any Chronicle reader about our work and my leadership.
