The chief financial officers at 10 of the country’s 25 top-grossing nonprofit hospitals were paid $1-million or more in 2011 or 2012, according to Becker’s Hospital Review.
Reviews of the medical centers’ most recent Internal Revenue Service filings found a CFO pay range of $423,000 to $2.29-million, with compensation averaging $967,000 across the 25 institutions. Those figures include base wages, bonuses, incentives, deferred compensation, and other reportable pay.
The top earners were Peter McCanna at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and Phyllis Lantos of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, who took home $2.29-million and $2.26-million in 2011, respectively. Mr. McCanna is now Northwestern Memorial’s chief operating officer.
