The family foundation of a former goalie for the University of North Dakota has given $20-million to the university for scholarships, athletics, and endowments, reports the Associated Press.
The Engelstad Family Foundation, in Las Vegas, will give $2-million per year for the next 10 years, with the first installment already given, the news service reports, in honor of the late Ralph Engelstad, who made his fortune by running casino businesses.
Mr. Engelstad, who graduated from the university in 1954, gave $100-million to build a new hockey arena at the school in 1998.
He threatened at one point to abandon the project if the university dropped the Sioux nickname for its athletic teams, the news service said. The university is now in court challenging an NCAA ban on the nickname in postseason play.
