$20 Million Gift Helps Minneapolis Art Museum Go Green

The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis unveiled plans Tuesday for a $75 million, largely donor-funded renovation of its grounds that will add a glass-walled entry pavilion, groves of trees, and acres of new green space to the museum’s campus, writes the Star Tribune. The biggest gift for the project came from local philanthropists Margaret and Angus Wurtele, whose $20 million donation.
Mr. Wurtele has served for more than 40 years on the Walker board. The museum has raised nearly $30 million more in private donations and secured $10 million in taxpayer funds toward the project. Pending approval by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, construction will begin in September and is expected to be completed by fall 2016.
