As Sydney gears up for this year’s Olympic Games, the host of the 2004 Games is using the Internet to seek advice from volunteers at previous Olympics.

The Greek Deputy Ministry of Sports has created a Web site, Volunteer 2004, where volunteers at past Olympic Games and other elite sporting events can share what they think does and doesn’t work when it comes to organizing and managing volunteers for large sporting events.

Organizers plan to use the information to design the volunteer program for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

In a message on the site, Georgios Floridis, the Greek deputy minister of sports, emphasized the importance of volunteers to the Olympic movement. “It is they who give life to the athletic ideals in our society. The value of participation, cooperation and devotion are characteristics rarely met in other human endeavors.”
