$21-Million Pledge Made to Va. College by Anonymous Donor; Other Recent Gifts

The College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, Va., has received a $21-million pledge from an anonymous donor to endow an undergraduate scholarship program. Students chosen to be College Scholars will receive financial assistance to cover approximately half the cost of attending the college, as well as additional grants for summer activities.
Other nonprofit organizations received large donations:
Bethesda Hospital Foundation (Boynton Beach, Fla.): $5-million pledge from George Cornell, of Delray Beach, Fla., a philanthropist and retired investment banker, to establish a rehabilitation institute at Bethesda Memorial Hospital and Bethesda Health City that will provide neurological, orthopedic, and physical treatment services.
Disabled Veterans’ LIFE Memorial Foundation (Washington): $2-million from Lois Pope, whose late husband, Generoso Pope Jr., founded the National Enquirer, to help build a memorial in Washington to honor America’s disabled veterans.
Fitchburg State College (Mass.): $1-million from Amelia V. Gallucci-Cirio, a 1938 graduate of the college and a retired teacher whose late husband was a real-estate businessman, for programs in Western history and Italian language and culture.
International Longevity Center-USA (New York): $1-million bequest from Werner and Elaine Dannheisser to endow the Program to Advance Healthy Aging.
North Carolina State U. (Raleigh): $1-million in a charitable remainder trust from a North Carolina couple who wish to remain anonymous, to endow the libraries.
Southern Methodist U. (Dallas): $1-million pledge from Gerald J. Ford, of Dallas, chair of the university’s Board of Trustees and chairman of Golden State Bancorp, a holding company in San Francisco, to endow research fellowships for faculty members.
U. of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (Little Rock): $1-million from Pat and Willard Walker, of Springdale, Ark., to endow a professorship in orthopedic surgery.
U. of Georgia (Athens): $1-million from former Georgia Governor Carl E. Sanders, chairman of Troutman Sanders, a law firm in Atlanta, to endow a professorship at the law school.
U. of Iowa (Iowa City): $1.1-million bequest from William L. Lillibridge, an alumnus who served as an assistant dean at the university’s medical college for 26 years, for the College of Education.
U. of Oklahoma (Norman): $12-million from Edward L. Gaylord, publisher of The Daily Oklahoman, in Oklahoma City, to help renovate Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
