Federal employees last year pledged a record total of $256.8-million to the Combined Federal Campaign, the government’s annual charity drive.
The campaign raised about 3 percent more than 2003’s total of more than $248-million, said the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, the federal office that oversees the campaign.
Federal civilian employees, members of the military, and U.S. Postal Service workers last year made pledges through more than 300 campaigns worldwide. The average pledge in 2004 totaled $247, compared with $224 in 2003.
The Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area, in Washington, D.C., raised the most, with $55.8-million in pledges.
The Combined Federal Campaign-Overseas, whose contributors include troops deployed abroad, had the second largest tally, with commitments of $14.9-million.
The two campaigns — which are managed by Global Impact, a nonprofit organization in Alexandria, Va. — together accounted for more than 27 percent of the total dollars raised in the federal government’s annual charity drive.
