$30-Million Gift Boosts Plan for Honors Dorm at USC

A $30-million donation from the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Foundation will support construction of a residence hall for incoming honors students at the University of Southern California, City News Service and the Del Mar Times report. The housing for up to 600 freshman honors students will be part of USC Village, a campus residence complex set to open in 2017.
The Los Angeles-based foundation was established in 1952 by Thomas Leavey, co-founder of Farmers Insurance, and his wife, Dorothy. It is chaired by their daughter, Kathleen Leavey McCarthy, a USC alumna and trustee, and has donated about $200-million to charities and institutions, including money for scholarships and libraries at the university.
