$40 Million Donated to the Museum of Modern Art and Other New Big Gifts

A roundup of notable gifts compiled by The Chronicle:

Museum of Modern Art

Kenneth Griffin, founder of the Citadel hedge fund, gave $40 million to the Museum of Modern Art through his Kenneth C. Griffin Charitable Fund.

The gift is unrestricted and museum officials plan to name the institution’s iconic building the Kenneth C. Griffin Building. The building was designed by the well-known architect Philip Johnson and opened in 1964.

Pittsburgh Foundation

Richard and Priscilla Hunt gave the foundation $15 million to establish a donor-advised fund to support charities in Pittsburgh and elsewhere.

The couple plans to give its first set of grants to Family Aid Boston, where Ms. Hunt serves on the board; the Southern Poverty Law Center, which the Hunts have supported since the 1950s; the American Field Service (Mr. Hunt served as a volunteer ambulance driver in World War II); Carnegie Mellon University; and Oberlin College, Ms. Hunt’s alma mater.

Mr. Hunt, a retired history professor, is the grandson of Alfred E. Hunt, who founded Alcoa, a global producer of aluminum and related products.

Torrance Memorial Medical Center

Allen Alpay gave $10 million for the California hospital’s east wing, the section that houses the emergency department and the labor and delivery unit.

The east wing will be named for Mr. Alpay, who is a former petroleum engineer and a real-estate investor. He and members of his family have been patients at the medical center.

Marist College

The Fox News host and author Bill O’Reilly gave $1 million to endow a scholarship program. He graduated from the college in 1971.

The Peter P. O’Keefe, Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship will provide full financial aid to one student annually beginning with an incoming member of the class of 2020. Mr. O’Keefe was a mentor to Mr. O’Reilly and one of his professors.

In addition to his cash gift, Mr. O’Reilly plans to meet with the O’Keefe Scholars to provide advice and guidance during their time at Marist.
