$48,000 Is Average Pay for Canadian Charity CEO’s

November 29, 2001 | Read Time: 2 minutes

Executive directors of Canadian charities this year make an average of $48,010 (U.S. dollars), according to a new survey by the Canadian Society of Association Executives, in Toronto.

The society’s 20th annual compensation survey examined four levels of management at four types of nonprofit organizations — industry and trade groups, professional associations, advocacy groups, and charities — and reported average compensation for each. More than 650 nonprofit groups from across Canada, 175 of them charities, participated in the study.

Managers at charities consistently reported the lowest salaries. The managers just below executive director in a charity’s hierarchy make an average of $40,411, the survey found. Midlevel managers (such as directors of public affairs or directors of finance) make an average of $33,937. Other managers, such as human-resources managers and meeting planners, make an average of $28,074.

Compensation for senior managers of all types of nonprofit organizations this year averaged $55,808 (in U.S. currency), a rise over the 2000 figure of $54,554. This year’s average salaries for senior managers returned to 1999 levels, which had dipped by an average of 1.5 percent last year.

The data were collected in July and August by the Association Resource Centre, a consulting and executive-search company in Toronto, and compiled in September, before the terrorist attacks further slowed the North American economy.

Researchers who conducted the survey had predicted an average 5-percent increase in salaries for 2002, according to Bob Hamp, manager of communications for the society.

But he said that forecast is in doubt now because of the weak economy, stemming in part from the September 11 attacks.

A summary of the 2001-2002 Association Executives Benefits and Compensation Report is available online at http://www.csae.com. The complete survey can be purchased on the site or by calling (416) 363-3555. The cost is $169 ($106 in U.S. currency) for members of the Canadian Society of Association Executives and $279 ($176 in U.S. currency) for nonmembers.
