John P. Morgridge, chairman of Cisco Systems, and his wife, Tashia F. Morgridge, a retired special-education teacher, have donated $50-million to the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, to be built near the University of Wisconsin, the university announced on Friday.
The donation will be matched by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, and the state also plans to provide $50-million to the research center.
The new facility will house two science centers, one of which will be public and supported by government grants and used primarily by the university.
The other, to be named the Morgridge Institute for Research, will be private and will allow scientists to work unencumbered by restrictions attached to government-financed projects.
