$53-Million Fund Started in Massachusetts

A $53-million foundation devoted to improving the health of people in central Massachusetts has been created as part of the sale of a non-profit health-maintenance organization to a for-profit company.
The Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts, based in Worcester, will begin to distribute about $2.5-million in grants next year. Much of its grant making will focus on improving the health of the area’s poor people and members of minority groups, as well as serving the health needs of rural residents.
The new foundation — the largest health fund in central Massachusetts — has been in the making since 1995, when Central Massachusetts Health Care, a non-profit HMO, was sold to Healthsource of New Hampshire, a for-profit company.
