7 Maryland Charities Certified as Excellent

November 18, 1999 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations has announced the names of the first seven charities to be certified as ethical and accountable under its new “Standards for Excellence” program approved last year.

Under the program, independent peer-review teams scrutinize charities to determine whether they comply with the code’s 55 standards.

The standards focus on such issues as good governance, conflicts of interest, public disclosure, program evaluation, and fund-raising practices (The Chronicle, July 16, 1998).

The charities certified as in compliance with the “Standards for Excellence” code are the central Maryland chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association and the American Red Cross, the Center for Poverty Solutions, the Fuel Fund of Maryland, Interfaith Housing of Western Maryland, Special Olympics Maryland, and the Maryland Food Bank.
