Title: 2017 Global Trends in Giving Report

Organization: The Public Interest Registry and Nonprofit Tech for Good

Summary: Seventy-three percent of charitable donors in the word are women age 37 or older, and nearly 60 percent of them prefer to give online. Ninety-three percent of them live in primarily wealthy, developed countries.

The findings of the report, which examined how donors worldwide prefer to give and interact with their favorite causes and charities, was based on responses from 4,084 donors throughout the world.

Among the other findings:

  • Religious and faith-based groups were the number-one cause among baby boomers, while Generation X and millennials were more likely to give to animal-related causes, human-rights and civil-rights groups, and nonprofits that help women and girls.
  • 45 percent of donors worldwide gave to nonprofits outside of the country where they lived.
  • 42 percent of online donors said social media was the tool that most often caused them to give.
  • Email remains a useful tool: 38 percent of online donors said email appeals inspired them to give, and nearly 60 percent said email was how they first learned of a fundraising event they recently attended.
