9/11 Museum to Seek Families’ Help on Gift-Shop Selection

May 29, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

The foundation that operates the National September 11 Memorial & Museum said Wednesday that it will enlist the help of board members who lost relatives in the 9/11 attacks to vet products sold in the museum’s gift shop, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The museum’s long-awaited opening earlier this month was marred by criticism from some 9/11 families that the shop and a planned upscale cafe serving food, wine, and beer were inappropriate at a site where the remains of hundreds of unidentified terrorism victims are buried.

Joe Daniels, president of the foundation, said the shop is necessary to help pay for museum operations but that the criticism is “a good reminder that as much ‘success’ as we’ve had … we have to remember that the sensitivity around 9/11 is so high.” He added, “We in no way presume to get everything right.”
