The Board Chair Handbook, Second Edition, by Mindy R. Wertheimer, is divided into three parts. The first discusses the decision to become a nonprofit board chairman, including information about responsibilities, communication, scheduling, and leadership. The second section focuses on board development, decision making, financial oversight, evaluation, and management. The final third of the book provides advice on stepping down from the chairman’s position, and appendices include sample letters asking trustees for annual gifts, recruiting a potential board member, and asking a member to leave the board. Each of the 12 chapters ends with a “to do” list that shows readers how they can apply the book’s advice to their own work as chairmen.
