How to Say It: Grantwriting
by Deborah S. Koch
Too many grant seekers send the same proposal to numerous grant makers without considering the unique perspective of each one, says Deborah S. Koch, director of grants at Springfield Technical Community College.
Ms. Koch recommends that a proposal writer first determine the political ideology of the grant maker and study how it approaches philanthropy, be it through direct services, research, or activism, and then fashion a proposal demonstrating how the organization’s work is in line with the grant maker’s point of view and practices. She writes, “Before you begin to write your grant proposal to this grant maker, immerse yourself in its personality. Remind yourself of how it sees the world and consider how it might react to what you propose.”
