A Reader Rebuts the Value of Professional Résumé Critiques

To the Editor:

I read with interest letters from professional résumé writers about a recent column that they disagreed with.

My own experience with “résumé writers” tells me that professionals will say anything to solicit business. I spent $600 on one résumé by a professional that resulted in zero interviews in my job search. I had an hour “consultation” about my résumé and job search with another. In this case, the so-called professional had me talk about the résumé and search for a half an hour. In both cases, the professionals were “certified.” Another $100 wasted. Her minimal suggestions on the résumé also resulted in zero interviews. And I am still looking.

I do believe there are reputable individuals within this industry. Unfortunately, there are too many cases such as mine that leads me, and I’m sure others, to agree with the columnist.
