John Brittain, a lawyer and civil-rights advocate who has had several clashes with leaders of the American Civil Liberties Union while serving on the organization’s national board, has been removed as a trustee, reports The New York Sun. Mr. Brittain, who had served on the group’s board for five years, was the only person among 12 candidates to fail to get enough votes from the organization’s members to win re-election to the board.
Mr. Brittain said he believes his ouster was connected to controversy over a proposal some viewed as an attempt to prevent board members from speaking publicly about disagreements within the organization.
Last year the organization voted Michael Meyers, a vocal critic of the group, off of its board, and Wendy Kaminer, another board member who criticized the group’s leadership, left in June.
