Activists and Philanthropists Make Fortune Leadership List

Nonprofit advocates who champion human rights, the environment, and other causes joined heads of state and captains of industry on Fortune’s 2016 selection of the world’s 50 greatest leaders, the Thomson Reuters Foundation writes.
Among those recognized in the magazine’s third annual leadership list were David Miliband, chief executive of the International Rescue Committee, which works on behalf of refugees; Rosie Batty, an Australian woman who launched a campaign against domestic violence after her 11-year-old son was killed by his father; and Mina Guli, another Australian activist who founded an organization to promote water conservation.
The roster also included Salesforce.com CEO and philanthropist Marc Benioff, who was cited for mobilizing his tech company into a vehicle to promote social causes such as pay equity and LGBT rights, and, jointly, Melinda Gates and Susan Desmond-Hellmann, CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, for their efforts to eradicate diseases in the developing world.
