October 14, 2004 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Nonprofit Board Member’s Guide to Lobbying and Advocacy, by Marcia Avner, provides recommendations for board members seeking to increase their nonprofit organizations’ impact on policy decisions. Ms. Avner, public-policy director at the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, in St. Paul, advises board members on incorporating advocacy efforts into their organization’s operations, and on raising money and building relationships to effectively lobby government at all levels. Appendixes include lobbying tips, a description of the 1976 lobby law and the restrictions it places on nonprofit lobbying efforts, and a list of related resources.
