Saying ‘Yes’ Wisely: Insights for the Thoughtful Philanthropist
by Richard Marker
Richard Marker, an adviser to donors, has assembled articles he has written over the past decades on a range of topics that he says donors and foundations should consider.
In an article on giving during the economic crisis, Mr. Marker advises foundations to consider the moral and ethical consequences of reducing support to charities. If their grants constitute a significant source of a budget for an organization, foundations should consider gradually ending their support or contribute to an endowment. “Responsible funders are aware of the impact of their giving on recipient organizations,”he writes, “and take the time to think through their role in that relationship.”
