Aid Groups in Sri Lanka Attacked

May 24, 2006

Suspected rebels attacked the offices of three international charities in Sri Lanka on Sunday in what is believed to be the rebels’ first attack on foreigners, reports the Associated Press.

A Serbian aid worker was wounded during the attack on the offices of the Belgian group Nonviolent Peaceforce. No injuries were reported in the attacks on ZOA, a Dutch aid group, and Intersos, an Italian organization.

Brig. Prasad Samarasignhe, a military spokesman, said he believed the separatist Tamil Tigers were responsible. The Tamils have denied the charge.
