Alabama Seeks to Take Over Red Cross Role

April 18, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Alabama’s governor has asked the Department of Homeland Security for the federal aid that would enable the state to take over responsibility for its emergency shelters from the American Red Cross, reports The New York Times.

Gov. Bob Riley, a Republican, said the Red Cross failed to provide necessary services and equipment after Hurricane Katrina, and that he would like the state to establish its own network of official state shelters.

Laura Howe, a spokeswoman for the Red Cross, said the nonprofit organization was already working with the governor to set up its shelter system and was poised to provide staff members and volunteers to help.
