Peter F. Secchia, a former U.S. ambassador to Italy and a graduate of Michigan State University, donated $20-million to the university to help create a medical school in western Michigan that will be named for him, reports The Detroit News.
Mr. Secchia, a business executive who lives in Grand Rapids, Mich., gave about half of what is needed for the new Secchia Center medical school, which plans to enroll its first class in Grand Rapids in 2010, the paper reports.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics at the university in 1963 and was ambassador to Italy from 1989 to 1993.
