During a two-hour special Tuesday featuring numerous celebrities, American Idol garnered more than $30-million in donations to benefit relief programs for American and African youths, reports Reuters.
A donation was made every time a viewer called or sent a text message to vote for a favorite singer. The corporate sponsors of the event were AT&T, Coca-Cola, and Ford. News Corporation, which owns the Fox television network, donated $5-million after 50 million votes were collected.
Viewers were also encouraged to donate to the charities that benefited: the Global Fund, Malaria No More, Nothing but Nets, Save the Children, and Unicef.
