President Clinton has announced a new $5-million effort to recruit up to 1,000 new AmeriCorps members over the next six months to serve non-profit organizations that help needy youngsters.
The new recruits, who will be called the AmeriCorps Promise Fellows, will work on projects to carry out the goals of last year’s Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future. Fellows might provide after-school programs or run community-service programs for inner-city youths.
Promise Fellows, who must be over age 17, will receive a living allowance of up to $13,000 and health insurance during their 10 to 12 months of service. Upon completion, they will become eligible for an education award of $4,725.
