An Exercise in Seeking Donations

Two charity leaders have decided to help their organizations raise money and attention by taking on arduous physical challenges.
Steve Koch, chair of Sinai Health System, in Chicago, last month completed a two-month, cross-country bike ride, traveling 3,100 miles with his son Jacob and raising more than $313,000 from 228 supporters. The ride, which the father-son team chronicled in a blog, will help pay for a new Ambulatory Care Center, projected to cost some $120-million.
And the Nature Conservancy released this humorous video to publicize the fact that its chief executive, Mark Tercek, will raise money and visibility for the environmental group by competing in the New York City Marathon this weekend.
Mr. Tercek is being joined by a few other Nature Conservancy officials for the run. One of their goals is to promote the Conservancy’s cause among a younger, more urban audience than its typical donor, whose average age is 60. So far, the video as well as messages on Facebook and other social-media sites have raised $155,000 in contributions.
