The San Francisco Foundation is distributing $34 million from an anonymous benefactor among more than 15 organizations providing health care, affordable housing, and other social services in low-income communities in Oakland, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

The funds could create some 2,500 jobs and more than 700 units of housing in the East Bay city, according to the newspaper.

Announcing the gift Tuesday, foundation CEO Fred Blackwell said his group was contacted in February by an unnamed donor about channeling millions of dollars into Oakland. “They wanted the money in the streets by the summer,” Mr. Blackwell said, calling the donation “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
